For the Van Dyk family, mountain biking has become so much more than a sport. What started with Ben Junior’s school cycling quickly turned into a family affair. As soon as he caught the racing bug, it wasn’t long before his mom, Merike, and dad, Ben Senior, joined in on the fun – because let’s face it, it’s hard to sit on the sidelines when your eight-year-old is tearing up the trails!
Their first taste of Ford Trailseeker sealed the deal. After that, there was no turning back. Now, they’ve set their sights on a big goal: to complete all four Gauteng Ford Trailseeker events this year and earn the full medal set.
Setting the Pace
At just eight years old, Ben Junior has already secured a sponsorship and regularly competes in the Gauteng Cycling Series and Cross-country (XC) races. One of his proudest moments so far is matching his dad’s race time at #2 Cradle. “I’ve probably got one more year before he starts beating me,” Ben Senior said with a grin.
At home, it’s clear Ben Junior is leading the charge. “He’s the one keeping us all on our toes,” laughs Merike. When they’re not on their bikes, the family keeps things strong and balanced with CrossFit sessions, making fitness a shared passion in and out of the saddle.
More Than Just a Race

The Trailseeker series holds a special place in their hearts; not just for the competition, but for the supportive community. They recall a moment when Ben Senior’s chain snapped mid-race. Just when it looked like his race was over, another rider pulled over without a second thought and helped him fix it. “There’s something special about this series,” Ben Senior explains. “Every time we race, we set goals, track our progress, and push ourselves to improve. It’s become our benchmark for growth.”
Ben’s younger twin sisters are getting ready to join the ride. While they’re still working up to race distances, it’s only a matter of time before the whole Van Dyk family is lined up at the start line together.
Next up #3 Die Bosveld
With their sights set on completing all four northern based events this year, the Van Dyks are getting ready for the next event Ford Trailseeker #3 Die Bosveld on the 7th of June. One thing’s clear: this family’s love for cycling is only picking up speed.
